Brooke (9
yrs.) and Garett (11 yrs.) Taylor are seasoned ocean travelers,
having sailed with their father on the Research Vessel Tiburon
throughout the Caribbean and South Atlantic. Both are
snorkelers and scuba divers, comfortable at depths up to 100
ft./30 m. Garett has the distinction of being the youngest
REEF-certified [Reef Environmental Education Foundation]
volunteer fish counter, passing his test of identifying one
hundred fish species at the age of 5. Accompanying their
father on various research expeditions has meant they have not
only met marine scientists, but have been involved first hand in
the field research. They have measured sharks, assisting as
tracking monitors are placed into the dorsal fin; identified
fish species killed as by-product catch of shrimpers’ trawling;
observed great white and tiger sharks from inside a dive cage;
and observed behaviors and swam with spotted dolphin pods. They
are youth advisors for
MagicPorthole.org, a Yale based National Science Foundation
funded childrens education site. These young explorers have now
expanded their geographic range with an expedition to the
Canadian High Arctic (May of 2007) Inuit tribe at Resolute Bay,
just 175 miles south of the North Pole, as members of the
Wild Blue Kids Arctic
explorers’ team.
