National Geographic Expeditionark Hunt
Join the crew of the R/V Tiburon as we cruise the out islands of the Florida Keys searching for sharks in this realm of coral and sea grass. Help capture and tag small specimens of the docile nurse shark, key to understanding the biology of more fierce species of sharks. Help scientist download the latest remote shark monitoring equipment. Kayak the mangrove islands of the Marquesas, walk the historic sands and battlements of the Dry Tortugas, cruise the clear island waters, snorkel rich patch reefs and coral gardens as we use the latest in scientific technology to track the elusive nurse shark.
Marine Biologist and shark expert Wes Pratt has been tagging sharks underwater and from the decks of research vessels for 35 years. He is an Adjunct Scientist with Mote Marine Laboratory and was a shark specialist with NOAA for three decades. Wes’s work is directed toward understanding the life history of blue, shortfin mako, great white, sandbar and nurse sharks. He has worked with the Tortugas population of juveniles and adults for 12 years. His cutting-edge research into the mating behavior of nurse sharks in the Florida Keys uses diving, videography and National Geographic’s Crittercam to reveal unknown and unexpectedly complex behaviors of these fascinating but poorly understood predators.
Day 1
Arrive in Key West, meet late afternoon to board the exploration support vessel Tiburon and find your cabin. Join the crew for orientation and dinner onboard. Choose to spend the evening onboard or in town. All aboard by 12 midnight for an early morning departure.
Day 2
Awaken at sea off the beautiful Marquesas Islands. A brief orientation in the galley set’s the stage for the next few days events; hunting nurse sharks for research.
We will use Tiburon’s tender to support snorkel dives to patch reefs and other areas where we are likely to see small nurse sharks. If you wish you can help spot the sharks and watch as Wes Pratt tries to catch them in his shark net. All of the sharks caught will be examined and sampled for ongoing scientific studies. All sharks will be tagged and released alive. At night we will anchor in the Marquesas archipelago and after dinner, enjoy an interactive evening presentation on sharks and coral reef ecology. Later that night, the Tiburon will depart for the Dry Tortugas Islands.
Day 3Awake for an early breakfast and go ashore on Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas to explore the historic Civil War era Fort Jefferson. The afternoon may be spent either with guided kayaking near the Bird Key tern rookery and Long Key frigate bird colony or swimming, snorkeling and relaxing on the beach at Garden Key.
A team lead by Wes will search for and recover four of the 16 shark monitors strategically placed to intercept signals from 8 adult sharks that he and his colleague Dr. Jeff Carrier have previously tagged with electronic tags. Each monitor will be debriefed and re-battery in the evening, as Wes illustrates the details of the research.
Day 4
Spend the morning snorkeling the Dutch shipwreck "Killian" sunk in 1907 and now rests in 1 to 18 feet of water and is home to several nurse sharks, Goliath Grouper and an amazing formation of coral gardens. The afternoon will be spent searching the shallows around Loggerhead Key and cast-netting for juvenile nurse sharks. Dinner and social evening for participants.
Day 5After breakfast we embark on the days shark hunt to explore the Dry Tortugas more remote reefs and coral formations. Lobsters are protected in the Tortugas National Park and grow to a giant size. Large grouper and colorful reef fish are common around every reef and coral head. Any juvenile sharks caught will be tagged, sampled and released. If tracking equipment is available, participants may help find and actively track sharks from Tiburon. In the afternoon, a team will replace the shark monitors to continue their sonic vigil.
Depart this evening for the Marquesas Islands and anchor for the evening. Dolphins, turtles and sea birds are a commonly sighted.Day 6
Awaken at sea off the beautiful Marquesas Islands. After breakfast as the science crew prepares the bottom fishing gear, a brief orientation in the galley set’s the stage for the today’s events; Catching sharks for research. We are likely to catch nurse, lemon, reef, nurse sharks and great hammerheads. All sharks will be tagged and released alive. After our final day of working up sharks we return to our docks in Key West and enjoy a fair well dinner aboard.
Day 7
Continental breakfast before departure. Fair well Event?
